- SOP, RESUME (강조한 내용 대략 설명):
Every single day during my childhood, I would spend three to four hours drawing
each day. I often drew plaster models of cylinders, pyramids or spheres, working through
the challenges of expressing three-dimensional figures on a sheet of paper. I also drew
glass bottles or flowing rivers, attempting to capture their transparent characteristics. Over
time I was able to learn how to draw realistically so that the drawings would come alive.
When I turned eleven, I found something other than drawing that caught my full
attention. I found the world of mathematics. Easily five or six hours would pass by when I
was solving math problems. At that time, I never dreamed that the two pillars of my
childhood, drawing and mathematics, would lead me to pursue research in advanced
topics of computer graphics.
When I enrolled at KAIST, I was hoping to find an area to study in advanced
mathematics that is applicable to the real world . I discovered such potential in computer
science. I enjoyed computer science very much because I enjoyed the mere challenge.
Especially, in a course called “Problem Solving”, one particular problem took me three
days and nights to find the proper solution. What was rewarding was that I ended up to be
the only one in the class that was able to solve the problem. Moreover the next semester
during a course in Algorithms, I found out that the algorithm , which I came up on my own
to solve the problem, was in fact the very concept of the dynamic programming. I was
thrilled that some day I could be in a position to solve a problem no one had ever solved
before.
It was during my senior year that I discovered computer graphics. The idea of how
objects in 3D could be projected into 2D captured my imagination. The problems that
computer graphics were trying to solve were exactly those problems that had constantly
aroused my curiosity since childhood. I perceive computer graphics is still a growing area
with much potential for innovation, which leaves an opportunity for me to contribute further
research in this area. Specifically, I am interested in physically based modeling and
rendering. Natural phenomena simulation and visualization are also topics that I would like
to look into further.
Not only am I interested in computer graphics, but also I have put in significant effort
to be equipped in this area for advanced research. Here I will state a couple of examples
of my efforts. Firstly, I have taken a number of courses in applied mathematics, which led
Personal Statement
Soonmin Bae
to achieving a minor in this subject. Studying mathematics provided me with competence
as well as broad viewpoints. For example, the course “Differential Geometry of Curves and
Surfaces”, which demonstrated the clear definition of geometric ideas, taught me
mathematical backgrounds of algorithms and methods, which can be directly applicable to
computer graphics.
Secondly, I have joined a micro-robot design project to learn more about computer
vision. Over the course of the project, I attempted to develop an improved vision control
system for micro-robots. Thirdly, I have worked hard to build a general background in
computer science for advanced study. For example, in an artificial intelligence course, I led
a team to develop a face recognition system using a neural network. We finally succeeded
in building a system that could recognize face images even with illumination noise and
posing effects.
Lastly, I have had the experience to be a part of a research community. I have been
working as a research assistant in the artificial intelligence lab led by Professor Hyun
Seung Yang. We are currently involved in a project with an objective to give a robot the
ability to express its emotion through visual means as well as enabling human-like
communication. I believe this research experience will prove to be a great benefit for me in
further studies.
Last year, I had the opportunity to participate in an exchange program at Simon
Fraser University, Canada. I was able to improve my English and get exposure in a foreign
environment. I was motivated by the Western academic culture where every student
actively participated in discussion and enjoyed the heated discussions over debatable
topics. Through the experience I have gathered, I gained confidence to my decision to
study abroad. My aspiration is to become a well-balanced professor who leads cuttingedge
research and who coaches and motivates students to study.
No doubt MIT is the leading academic institution in the world, especially in the area
of computer graphics. I hope you will give me the opportunity to develop my talents to
conduct valuable research with you. I sincerely wish to be a member of your school.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my application. I look forward to hearing
from you soon.
그리고 KAIST 98학번에서 CS 중에서 석차가 2등이라는 것도 도움이 되었을 것 같습니다. 그리고 고등학교 때 수학 경시대회 도대회에서는 상을 탔다는 거. ^^;;
참고로
MIT, CMU, Stanford, Berkeley, UIUC, Cornell, Princeton, UW, Caltech, GT, Brown, UNC, USC, NYU
admission : MIT, UIUC, Caltech, GT, Brown, UNC, USC
reject : CMU, Stanford, Berkeley, Cornell, Princeton, UW
